Promotions and discounts
Shoppers can be given discounts either directly against an individual product or against their order as a whole.
Product Discounts
Individual products can be discounted in the "discount" tab of the product.
Discounts
These are discounts applied to the order as a whole and are set up from the "discounts" menu.
Discounts can be applied as a percentage of the whole order, the sub-total of products or the delivery. A fixed amount discount can be applied to the whole order. Various triggers and constraints are used to determine exactly how the discount is applied and who may receive it.
The most common discounts are a percentage off the customer's first order to encourage them to give you a try and free delivery when the order value is above a certain amount.
Enable/disable discounts
Discounts are enabled and disabled by changing the valid to and valid from dates. They cannot be deleted.
Discounts are reapplied on picking
Discounts are reapplied when the order is picked and can therefore change, be removed from the order or a discount that was not on the original order could now be applied.
For example if your discount was free delivery when the sub-total is more than £50 and one product was not available that may take the order value below £50. If this happened the discount would be removed from the order and the customer would now be paying the full delivery charge.
Use discount groups to prevent multiple discounts
Use a numerical value in the discounts group field to group discounts together. When you do this only one discount from the group will be applied to the customer's order and that will be the one that gives the customer the biggest discount. It always works in the customer's favour.
Which discount trigger to use?
Wherever possible use discounts that trigger automatically rather than ones that require the customer to do something, like add a claim code. A discount cannot be added to an order once the order status has changed to "picking in progress".
Where can shoppers see their discounts?
For the shopper to see any discounts that might be applied to their order they must have reserved their delivery slot. Once they have done this any discount that will be applied to their order can be seen on the basket page.
